FeFF Director Statement

Welcome to the 18th edition of the Female Eye Film Festival!

FeFF 2020 marks our festival’s official move to the month of March, to intersect with International Women’s Day annually as we move forward here at the beautiful TIFF Bell Lightbox.

The theme of IWD 2020 is “I Am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights,” in alignment with UN Women’s new Generation Equality campaign.

In 2003, I curated a program of films for IWD at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The theme was the AIDS pandemic and its impact on women and girls. This experience was life-altering. It evolved my perspective on FeFF and emphasized the need to expand our international programs and cultural exchanges. Since then, FeFF has guest-curated programs in Armenia, Turkey, Greece, Portugal, and the United States. In 2020, we will partner with sister festivals in Chile, Lebanon, Sweden, and Russia.

This is a pivotal year for advancing gender equality worldwide, and our industry offers the perfect platform to embrace this theme. We are delighted to open the festival with American Woman, written and directed by Semi Chellas. We will also celebrate the work of Deborah Kampmeier, whom we have admired since her 2003 debut feature, Virgin, starring Elisabeth Moss. FeFF will screen a retrospective of four of Kampmeier’s films and will close with her new feature, Tape.

We welcome you to celebrate films directed by women from around the world. Thank you for joining us in recognition of International Women’s Day.

Upward and onward.

Yours sincerely,
Leslie Ann Coles, Founder, Executive and Artistic Director, The Female Eye

The Female Eye Film Festival (FeFF) is a Designated Industry Partner for Telefilm’s Talent to Watch Program. We are also recommending projects for the Indigenous Stream. For the Indigenous stream the writer, director and producer team must identify as Indigenous. For non-Indigenous projects, only the director must have had a short film presented at  the Female Eye Film Festival FeFF.
